چکیده

We have searched six stars with known radial velocity planetary companions for circumstellar disks. Disks are expected around stars with planetary systems that accreted from regular protoplanetary disks, and remnant disks are expected to be similar to our solar systemÏs Kuiper Belt. To date, we have detected circumstellar disks around three such stars : 55 Cnc, o CrB, and HD 210277. All these systems now resemble mature planetary systems with Jupiter-mass companions and Kuiper BeltÈlike disks. Our previous detection of the 55 Cnc disk (Trilling & Brown) is included here to place that disk in the context of the other two newly detected disks. Measuring the inclinations of the disks and assuming the disks are coplanar with the planetsÏ orbits determines the masses of the planets around these three stars to be and respectively (1 is one Jupiter mass). We also report 1.9 ~0.4 `1.1 M J , 1.5 ~0.1 `0.2 M J , 2.2 ~0.2 `0.6 M J , M J nondetections for three starsÈ51 Peg, t And, and Gl876Èthat are known to have radial velocity companions. A number of possibilities exist to explain nondetections of disks, from the absence of a disk to limits on disk mass, radial extent, or inclination. We may also be looking through a diskÏs central hole, especially for the nearby star Gl876. The radial brightness proÐles of each of the observed disks follow a power law with index D[5, including a power of [2 from the stellar Ñux drop o†, similar to the suggested value for our solar systemÏs Kuiper Belt. This likely suggests that uniform physical processes govern the Kuiper BeltÏs population out to at least 100 AU, and may be ubiquitous among disks. Last, we discuss how disk characterizations can lead us toward reÐning theories of planetary system formation. Subject headings : circumstellar matter È Kuiper Belt, Oort Cloud È planetary systems È solar system: formation

Debris Disks around Nearby Stars with Circumstellar Gas

We conducted a survey for infrared excess emission from 16 nearby main sequence shell stars using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Shell stars are early-type stars with narrow absorption lines in their spectra that appear to arise from circumstellar (CS) gas. Four of the 16 stars in our survey showed excess emission at 24 μm and 70 μm character...

Evolution of Gas and Dust in Circumstellar Disks

A clear understanding of the chemical processing of matter as it is transferred from a molecular cloud to a planetary system depends heavily on the physical conditions endured by gas and dust as these accrete onto a disk and are incorporated into planetary bodies. Reviewed here are astrophysical observations of circumstellar disks which trace their evolving properties. Accretion disks that are ...

μ m SPECTROSCOPY OF ELIAS 1 : ORIGIN OF DIAMONDS IN PROTOPLANETARY DISKS 1

We present spatially resolved 3 μm spectra of Elias 1 obtained with an adaptive optics system. The central part of the disk is almost devoid of PAH emission at 3.3 μm; it shows up only at 30 AU and beyond. The PAH emission extends up to 100 AU, at least to the outer boundary of our observation. The diamond emission, in contrast, is more centrally concentrated, with the column density peaked aro...

The Evolutionary State of Anemic Circumstellar Disks in IC 348 and The Primordial-to-Debris Disk Transition

We investigate the evolution of ∼ 3 Myr-old MIPS-detected circumstellar disks in IC 348 that may be in an intermediate stage between primordial, optically-thick disks of gas/dust and debris disks characteristic of the final stages of planet formation. We demonstrate that these anemic disks are not a homogenous class of objects corresponding to a unique evolutionary state. Rather, such disks aro...

A search for previously undetected optically thin disks around stars in the nearby, young, TW Hy-drae Association was conducted around sixteen stars with sensitive 12 and 18 µm photometry. The survey could detect Zodiacal-like dust, with temperature 200–300 K, at levels of L IR /L ⋆ =7×10 −3. Possible mid-infrared excess emission from TWA 17 was detected at the 2σ level, but none of the other s...
